Joshua Tree tour from the Coachella Valley

A Joshua Tree tour makes the national park a rewarding day out from a Coachella Valley base. The journey needs more planning than choosing a park entrance: decide which part of the park you want to see, where your trip starts, and how much walking suits your group. Rancho Mirage is a separate city in the valley, and tours may start in Palm Springs or Palm Desert. Check the meeting point and the selected departure before you arrange your journey.

A guided scenic trip includes general admission, a guide, water and snacks, with more than one departure option. Confirm the Palm Springs departure and its time when choosing that option. Two other trips leave from a Palm Desert meeting point: one explores by an offroad vehicle and the other follows paved roads. Compare the route, meeting instructions and admission terms for the specific choice.

National park planning and entrances

The West Entrance lies south of Joshua Tree Village near Highway 62, the North Entrance is near Twentynine Palms, and the South Entrance at Cottonwood is reached from Interstate 10 east of Indio. An entrance is only the start of the journey: choose your trail or viewpoint as well, and allow time to return. Navigation apps can suggest unsuitable sandy roads, so use park directions and stay on designated roads.

Before departure, save an offline map and your pass. Mobile coverage is limited, and a current conditions check helps you adapt to closures or weather. A guided offroad itinerary does not give visitors permission to drive their own vehicle off road. If you are driving independently, choose legal roads and pullouts, rather than stopping in the traffic lane to take photographs.

Entry fees and passes

The National Park Service lists a seven day entrance pass at 30 USD per private vehicle, including its occupants. The motorcycle pass is 25 USD, and entry on foot or by bicycle costs 15 USD per person aged 16 and over. The seven days describe pass validity, not the time required to visit. These are published 2026 categories; check the current fees before travel.

For broader travel, the 2026 Resident Annual Pass is 80 USD and the Non-Resident Annual Pass is 250 USD. Choose the category that applies to you rather than assuming one annual price fits everyone. A tour may handle admission differently, so read the inclusion for the specific booking before purchasing a separate pass.

Hiking in Joshua Tree

Short walks provide different ways to experience the landscape. Hidden Valley is a one mile loop, while Cap Rock is a 0.4 mile route. Barker Dam combines granite formations and Joshua trees with traces of earlier ranching. Water in the basin depends on rainfall, so do not plan on seeing a filled pool. Check current trail conditions before choosing a walk and allow for the return to your vehicle.

In summer the park advises avoiding hikes from 10:00 to 17:00 and starting short walks before 09:00. Heat changes the demands of even a short route. Wear suitable footwear, carry water, and turn your plan into a shorter walk if conditions require it. Pets are excluded from hiking trails apart from the paved Oasis of Mara trail.

Nature and wildlife

Joshua trees and granite boulders give the park its recognizable landscape, but wildlife encounters and flowers vary with conditions. Watch the road for animals and leave snakes undisturbed. At Barker Dam, respect rock art by leaving it untouched and not climbing on it. A quiet visit and a little distance help protect the place for everyone.

The park recommends at least one US gallon of water per person per day, plus a reserve in the vehicle. Carry an offline map and a return plan. Check weather and flash flood conditions before setting out, and match the length of the day to the people in your group. For a different desert landscape, see Indian Canyons; compare regional departures on tours and arrival options in getting here.
